FAQ

Our freeze-dried meals may seem like magic, but they’re quite simple. Here, we’ve answered some of the most common questions we get. Can’t find the information you’re looking for? Reach out anytime.

  • Are your products local?
SLY is a company founded in the Laurentians region (see the About us page). We produce all our meals locally. Most of the ingredients are also local (check out the limited editions), but some recipes require products that are imported. We haven’t figured out how to grow coconuts in Québec...yet!
  • Where do you source your ingredients?
Most of the ingredients are local or Canadian. Some are imported.
  • Are your meals GMO-free?
Yes. We don’t use any ingredients that contain GMOs.
  • Do your meals contain common allergens?
Our products contain wheat, soy and peanuts.
  • Are your meals gluten-free?
Many of our meals are naturally gluten-free.
  • Are your meals suitable for children?
Yes, most of our meals are well-liked by children. Some even enjoy eating the meals as a snack, without rehydrating them!
  • What is the difference between freeze-dried and dehydrated?
Freeze-dried food retains its shape and nutritional value. When it’s rehydrated, it maintains its taste and texture. Dehydrated food loses its texture and nutrients, and rehydration alters the taste.
  • What is the shelf life of your freeze-dried meals?
A freeze-dried meal that is properly stored basically never expires. We recommend you eat the meal within three years.
  • How do freeze-dried meals affect the weight of my backpack?
If you can source natural water (from a lake, river or spring), you’ll save about 350 grams of weight per meal. That can make a significant difference when you’re carrying multiple meals.
  • How are your meals packaged to ensure freshness?
The pack is made of three protective layers: PET, aluminum and nylon. We include an oxygen absorber to ensure the meal can be stored for a long time.
  • How are your meals packaged?
Once freeze-dried, the products are packaged in bags, sealed and stored in our facilities.Once freeze-dried, the products are packaged in bags, sealed and stored in our facilities.
  • Why is there a packet in the pack?
It’s an oxygen absorber that maintain the freshness of the product, extends its shelf life and prevents the ingredients from deteriorating, oxidating or degrading. In short, it preserves the quality of the product. However, the oxygen absorber is not edible, so be sure to discard it before you prepare your meal.
  • Are your meals 100% vegan?
Yes, all our ingredients are plant-based.
  • Do you offer vegetarian meals?
All our meals are 100% plant-based, so they are vegetarian as well.
  • How do I prepare a freeze-dried meal?
Add the exact amount of boiling water (it’s important to be accurate), mix well and let the pack sit for about ten minutes.
  • Can the meals be rehydrated with cold water?
Cold water works, but it takes much longer (over 30 minutes).
  • Can I prepare your meals directly in the packaging?
Yes, pour the hot water directly into the pack, mix well and seal it. You can then tear more of the pack, so it’s easier to eat directly from the pouch.
  • What are the main ingredients in your vegan freeze-dried meals?
Depending on the recipe, you’ll find legumes (split peas, beans), grains (rice, wheat, corn), soy protein, vegetables and spices. We use canola oil because it’s easily digestible and rich in unsaturated fats and omega-3.
  • What is the average portion size of your meals?
Most of our meals contain around 700 kcal, with a rehydrated weight of approximately 500 grams.
  • How do I choose a meal suited to my caloric needs during an outdoor adventure?
It depends on the amount of energy you’ll be expending. An average day requires around 2,000 kcal, so two of our meals and some snacks would suffice. For more extreme activities, you may need up to 6,000 kcal from several calorie-dense meals.
  • Which meals are the highest in protein?
The three meals with the most protein are our Chili (40 g per serving), Pad Thai (36 g per serving) and Pasta Bolognese (32 g per serving).
